What is hermeneutics? How did “Understanding” become a central preoccupation

of Method in the Geistwissenschaften? Be able to discuss briefly Schleiermacher and Dilthey, and at greater length Weber from lecture. How does Geertz draw on this tradition of hermeneutics in framing an interpretive and symbolic anthropology? What kind of terms does Geertz develop as he tries to get at “emic” understandings, and how does he explain his method. How might Hochschild’s use of “deep story” be discussed in relation to this question of interpretation and understanding?
