Preventing Medication Errors: Getting Patients Involved

In 2002, The Joint Commission began a campaign called, “Speak Up.” Patients are encouraged to be actively involved in their care. It is estimated that this push to get patients aware and involved in their care has prevented errors and saved lives. How should patients be involved in medication administration? What questions should the patients ask? How can you encourage your patient to speak up when receiving a medication(s)? What medication errors could be prevented by patients speaking up?
