Discussion Question

To prepare for this discussion, think about the global companies with which you are familiar. Perhaps you see yourself working for one of these large organizations after your graduation. Then view the video, “Low Context vs. High Context Societies,” and review the web site, Hall’s Cultural Factors.

Now, assume that you need to communicate a new policy to everyone within a global organization. Compare and contrast how you would communicate this policy to either a high-context or a low-context audience. Is it possible to write a single memorandum to all of the company’s employees? Assignment In a well-organized and well-written essay of three-to-four pages (5 pages max; full 3 pages minimum), you will address the question of diversity within your fieldwork institution from Essay 1. This assignment will ask you to do a semi-structured interview with a participant about diversity at your field institution and relate your question to broader global issues. Make sure you address feedback on your writing in from previous essays as you write your assignment. Your essay should cover the following points: Address a diversity-based problem or issue based on prior participant observation at your institution (field setting). What social problem or issue did you observe that might be an issue at your field site? You should use your prior observations, course readings, discussions, and current events to develop and support a strong thesis statement about the problem of diversity at your field institution. Semi-structured interview. These allow you to get in-depth information from a particular person based upon existing data, such as your results from participant observation. You will develop a list of 7-10 questions to ask your participant about the problem you identified. You must take notes during your interview, transcribe them into a Word document, and turn them in along with your essay. Your transcript should not be part of the essay. Analysis. You should re-read your interview and identify themes that are related to your social issue. How do your participant’s responses relate to the problem that you identified? Connecting local to global. What is the relationship between the problem you identified in your work and larger global concerns? Developing a proposal is one of the first steps in an academic research process. Your audience for this proposal includes your classmates, who may have disparate backgrounds and limited knowledge of your topic, and your instructor, who is unlikely to have specialized knowledge in exactly the topic you’ve chosen. Consequently, your task is to present a concise (350-500 words) yet well-supported proposal in which you introduce the contemporary global issue you’ve selected, explain its significance, both in your own field of study and to the larger external population, and present a clear argument as to why this topic is worthy of time and attention. Your proposal must demonstrate your understanding of the scope of the social and cultural issues related to this topic while demonstrating your familiarity with relevant scholarly research.

Using the information included in Scaffold Step #1 (Topic Proposal Worksheet) from Webtext Ch. 1 and other scholarly sources you may have collected, organize your work so that it effectively develops your argument. Follow the conventions of academic essay writing with a title page; double-spaced text; clear introduction, body, and conclusion; and a reference page. Your work should be original, with quotations limited to less than 10% of your total word count. Use only scholarly sources in your proposal, and include citations in APA format.

Be sure your work clearly states the problem in a way that anyone unfamiliar with your field of study will understand. Draw an explicit connection between the topic and one or both of your Degree Depths; this will help establish the relevance of your topic to your studies.

When summarizing key issues and themes found in your preliminary reading, consider how the issue may affect vulnerable and disenfranchised populations around the world, and the ethical issues that may be involved. Synthesize the key disagreements among the research studies; this will help your audience understand the need to study the issue.
